Thursday 8th July, 2021 English Adaptive Surfing Open - Mark Hagger, Assisted Adaptive Surf Champion.

ASSISTED CHAMPION 2021

MARK HAGGER

JULY 8th, 2021

Knowing how much surfing meant to Mark before his MS it was only a matter of time until the day he decided he had to adapt and become comfortable with the ever-changing life ahead of him. With that adaptation, it became clear that his desire was to be back in the water with new expectations and embracing the new opportunities within Adaptive Surfing.

Thursday 8th July, 2021 English Adaptive Surfing Open - Mark Hagger.

An early start with an excitement in the air, Mark being one of the first competitors at The Wave was lucky to watch the very first waves of the day. Picture a completely perfect mirror flat lake, then imagine the first ripples coming through, with each small wave doubling, and building up as the very first sets rolled in from the wave machine. The atmosphere was now set with waves pumping through in the background, where friendly rivals gathered to greet each other, cheerfully finding out when their heats were due to begin and excited to find out who was surfing with who. Those heats lasted for six sets of waves. All rides were scored, and the top wave from left and right were combined to give a final score at the end of the contest.

“Setting the day off, the Assisted Division.

Mark, competing with Surfing England for his first time excelled throughout. With a wave score of 7.17 he took the Championship for Assisted Adaptive Surfing Champion.

The man-made lagoon on the former aluminium site in Dolgarrog became the world’s first inland venue to host an adaptive surfing championship event in 2019.

After a break during the pandemic, adaptive surf athletes around the globe were keen to see it return to North Wales. The surfers competed in nine different categories catering for a range of different abilities. It offered great facilities for both the athletes and the spectators, SHUKIDOG Team stayed in the wheelchair-friendly accommodation pods. Admission was free to watch the event, with a great turn out of both Adaptive Surfers and supporters. Mark came 1st and won the Welsh Adaptive Surfing Championships.

Adaptive surfers all struggle to find sponsorships. With the help of a couple of close friends - who also surf with Mark, they came up with the idea to start SHUKIDOG SURF Mark's own brand to help him to fund the Adaptive surfing journey.

In 2022 SHUKIDOG SURF has sponsored an additional two Adaptive athletes - for the Welsh Open, and future plans we hope to sponsor more adaptive surfers, as the brand grows.

Andy Joyce: Surf Steps

Andy Joyce, started Surf Steps 10 years ago and, by doing so, pioneered the first surf school on the Hampshire/Dorset coast. A lot of people said “it’ll never work”, but Andy believed in the dream – and they are still here!

Surf Steps was involved with a charity called Surf Relief, who used adaptive equipment to give children with disabilities a great in-water surfing experience. They used really large surfboards, put the students on the front, paddled into waves and, with the instructor/guide at the back, surfed in tandem. To help Surf Steps provide the sessions locally in Bournemouth, Surf Relief gave them a tandem board.
